Counter Strike Condition Zero started development in 2000 by Rogue Entertainment, and was initially announced in May 2001 at E3 of that year. Rogue’s producer for the game, Jim Molinet, later that year moved to Sonyand the development company went defunct, leaving Valve empty. Later, they gave it to Gearbox Software, the developers of the Half-Life expansion packs, so that Valve could focus on the development rival Team Fortress 2 and its new engine.

After a few developmental delays, it missed its late 2002 deadline and was given over to Ritual Entertainment, who completely remade the game into a single-player one with 20 unconnected missions.[2] It was expected to be released in early 2003 with a secondary multiplayer mode by the upstart Turtle Rock Studios, and released alongside the Xbox version of Counter-Strike.

However, after declaring the game gold and handing out review copies of Ritual’s work, Valve saw an average review score of around 60%. The companies retracted the gold status and work on Counter Strike Condition Zero was essentially begun again. Ritual’s share of development was dropped, and Valve assigned Turtle Rock to finish development. They implemented a new bot AI that was beta tested in Counter-Strike 1.6 before release. The final game contained a version mirroring Gearbox’s version, along with 12 missions recovered from Ritual’s single-player portion, called Deleted Scenes.

Development about Counter Strike Condition Zero

Counter Strike Condition Zero is a first-person shooter and a sequel of sorts to the Counter-Strike modification for the game Half-Life. Although this is the product of an amateur development team, the original Counter-Strike soon became one of the most popular shooters of its day. That left the creators with a bit of a quandary, since so many players were left enjoying their game, without those creators receiving a cent for their efforts. Valve, the creator of Half-Life and the Goldsrc engine it rode upon, had an answer: They would develop a commercial sequel that would, unlike the original, result in revenue.

A developer named Gearbox, already famous at that point for its porting abilities, was given the task of creating the game, although that arrangement didn’t last long. After Ritual took over, things picked up some, but it wasn’t long before they, too, were found wanting. Their progress was largely scrapped, development was given over Turtle Rock, the future makers of Left 4 Dead, and it wasn’t long before the game was finally making good progress. Turtle Rock were able to salvage parts of the earlier developers’ efforts in the form of levels that made it into the final release of the game in the end, as well. The resulting game is unique among the earlier Counter Strike Condition Zero properties in that it lets players compete against computer-controlled bots. This leads to something of a smoother learning curve, as newcomers to the game don’t need to jump into the shark tank that is online multiplayer right away. Unfortunately, many series veterans felt that Counter Strike Condition Zero lacked a lot of what made Counter-Strike great.

Critics agreed, giving the game middling reviews, and market response was fairly tepid. The basic Counter-Strike game flow, where terrorists fight to plant bombs and the like and counter-terrorists strive to stop them, was there, but it was not found in as finely tuned a form as players had come to expect.

However, Counter Strike Condition Zero is still a fun game. You could argue that its lack of distinction reflects the quality found in the other games in the series instead of being a result of its own basic problems. While Counter Strike Condition Zero won’t stand out as a high-water mark of the series, it does actually offer some fairly solid game-play. Today, it is probably most of interest to those looking to delve into the history of this important franchise, since other FPS games overshadow it today in most ways, including with regard to its single-player bot mode, by other versions of the intellectual property.

The development of Counter Strike Condition Zero originally started in 2001 with Rogue Entertainment working on the game, but development was overtaken by Gearbox Software relatively quickly due to concerns with the financial stability of Rogue Entertainment. After about a year of development, Gearbox Software decided to withdraw from the project and in mid 2002 Ritual Entertainment took over development before the game finally landed in the hands of the relatively young Turtle Rock Studios in mid 2003.

Turtle Rock Studios had already been involved with development of the game when Ritual Entertainment was in charge of its development in the form of the official bots.Internal playtests at Valve Software and early reviews of the game developed by Ritual Entertainment had revealed some serious short comings in its design. On the other hand, the official bot created by Turtle Rock Studios had been very well received by the community and the press, which is why Valve Software decided to give Turtle Rock the responsibility of redesigning the game from scratch in around June 2003.

The design by Turtle Rock Studios drew some inspiration from sports games, and due to the success of the bots it became possible to build very flexible arcade-like missions for the game. While the design of the game by Gearbox Software was never officially mentioned as a source of inspiration, the similarities are quite obvious. Instead of completely scrapping the work done by Ritual Entertainment, the decision was made to package it up as a bonus game of sorts with the title Counter Strike Condition Zero Deleted Scenes.

On October 8, 2003 the version of the game designed by Turtle Rock Studios was unveiled to the public and it was to go gold by October 10, 2003 and be available at retail and via Steam on November 18, 2003.Only a day after this version of the game had been announced, it would end up getting leaked coinciding with the Half-Life 2 leak.

By the time November 18, 2003 came around the game was nowhere to be seen. According to Jess Cliffe, the game had been delayed due to work needed to be done by the publisher in finalizing international versions of the game.Soon, Valve Software would also drag this into their on-going lawsuit with the publisher Vivendi Universal Games claiming that Vivendi purposefully delayed the release of Condition Zero which made it miss the 2003 holiday season.
